FAQ and Learning Center

What information do I need to provide to create a 3D model?

Impact 3D Models can create a physical model from most CAD applications, including 3D and 2D drawings, or from hand drawn sketches and pictures.  You may also provide your print ready 3D CAD file to us.

If I provide a 3D file, are there are any special requirements that need to be met?

All 3D printable models are required to be ‘water tight’, that is surfaces need to join together, no holes in the part etc. Walls of parts also must have minimum thicknesses to create a sturdy model.  Impact 3D Models checks all files and will notify you if your part has errors.

What is the biggest object Impact 3D Models can build?

In a single build, we can fit an object (or a group of objects) into a 15″x10″x8″ build area.  If your project or model is larger than this,we can divide it into into smaller pieces.

How many models can be created at a time?

When working with smaller models, we generally can print several models at a time (both multiples of one design, or single pieces of several designs.)

What file types can I submit?
Impact 3D accepts .STL, .WRL (aka VRML), .ZPR, and .3DS file formats for direct printing.   Impact 3D Models also accepts other CAD file formats to create a 3D printable model.  Please let us know what 3D file you have and we will find a method to make it print ready.

What are those file types listed above?

.STL, .WRL, .ZPR, and .3DS are all 3D print ready file formats.   STL is manly for monochrome parts, while .WRL and .3DS files support color, and .ZPR files support both color and textures.  Most CAD programs are capable of exporting one or more of these file formats.  Remember:  If you export a color 3DS or WRL file, please provide us the entire folder including textures and images.

I do not know how to create any of those file types from my CAD program.

If you are unfamiliar with this process, please contact us for assistance!  We are knowledgeable on exporting printable formats from many common CAD programs.

What is the turnaround time for my 3D model?
In many cases, we can turn around most standard size models in 2 business days.  Please contact us if you have special time requirements for your project.

Is it possible to apply a finish my model?

Yes.  In fact, we recommend applying a post print finish to all completed models.  Impact 3D Models provides the following forms:

  • Color and material enhancing hardener.
  • Texture smoothing wax
  • 2 part epoxy. Allows you to drill, mill, and tap model surfaces.
  • Epsom Salt Water.  Provides the brightest white finish with a medium strength.
  • Clear Coat.  Available in matte or high gloss.
  • Most models can be painted with a standard lacquer paint.

Most customers choose to finish their models with a combination of the color and material enhancing hardener and wax finish.
